Robyn… Then and Now

Real talk — lately I’ve been on a Robyn kick. Although her trilogy EP Body Talk came out in 2010, I seem to hear her everywhere I go these days. And thank goodness, because I’ll admit when the Swedish pop singer released the latest effort I initially dismissed it. Probably because I was nostalgic for 90’s circa Show-Me-Love Robyn.

Listening with fresh ears, however – and a dance floor beneath me – has given me new perspective and made me seen the error of my ways. I defy you to listen to any of these electropop gems without breaking into dance.

And a bonus Avicii remix of “Hang With Me”:

Odesza – iPlayYouListen

Odesza, an electronic Washington-based duo dropped their debut album Summer’s Gone earlier this month.

The track “iPlayYouListen” caught my attention in particular.  Most likely because it samples the alluring vocals of Local Natives (or at least, I’m fairly certain it does).

The album is available for download in its entirety here.

Grizzly Bear – Sleeping Ute

Grizzly Bear released their new album, Shields this Tuesday, and thusly played to sold out shows at 930 Club in DC this week. Having missed my earlier opportunity to purchase tickets, I started a twitter campaign in an effort to gain last minute entry. I came as close as to have someone email me with details…but in the end they had to rescind their offer. As a consolation, they offered to write me either a song or sky message…neither of which has ever been done for me I don’t think. Almost makes up for it…almost.

Anyway, below is the sweepingly melodic and layered track “Sleeping Ute” off of the new album.

My favorite from their previous album, Veckatimest…the hauntingly beautiful “Ready, Able.”

And still earlier Grizzly:

Each day, spend it with me now
All my time, spend it with me now

Bloc Party — and this blog — are back!

The time has come to resurrect my humble indie blog.  Over the years I have created several domains with the intention of sharing music, that for one reason or another never came to fruition…save for a sprinkling of music musings on an analogous tumblr account.  Part of the problem was that I could never quite figure out the best way to share songs, but now with the advent of SoundCloud the solution is pretty simple. Thus, I integrated my old tumblr logs into WordPress and from here on out all posts will be solely dedicated to great tunes!

Bloc Party is also back with their fourth and aptly-titled new album, “Four,” which was released last month. They played at the 930 Club in DC yesterday, and while I’m sure it was a stellar show, alas my attendance was not meant to be. Here are a couple of my favorite tracks off the new album:

I know a lot of people are like, “Ew. I’m SO above remixes, they ruin the essence of the song.”

I mean, sure. That happens from time to time.

But isn’t it sort of amazing when someone tweaks something in the teeniest way…like they’re cooking and they think, “BAM, pinch of paprika, motherfuckers” and then it tastes amazing?

That’s what a good remix is.

A pinch of paprika, motherfuckers.
