VÉRITÉ – Colors

With the release of her debut EP Echo last year, NY-based songstress VÉRITÉ has been building a veritable amount of buzz this past year. Her latest cut “Colors,” however, produced by Zach Nicita of MS MR might be our favorite offering yet, as well as the song that should cement her status as one to watch in the synthpop realm.

Speaking to Pop Justice about the track’s origins, VÉRITÉ averred “I had been forwarded the track from my manager and was immediately semi-obsessed with how hard the percussion hit from the start. It’s the first time I had collaborated with Zach and written over a track that was so developed. It definitely challenged me to write strong and dynamically from the start and really strongly solidify a departure from ambient synth pop.”

No doubt that the melismatic tune is the singer’s most complex and colorful track to date. Look out for “Colors” to be released on an upcoming EP. VÉRITÉ will also be embarking on a tour across Europe in May.

Mirror Talk – 1/M/T

Meet Mirror Talk, the LA-based quartet who combine new wave grooves with silky smooth vocals and ’80s soundscapes. In fact their new track, “1/M/T” sounds just like an ’80s power ballad, complete with choppy bass and dancey synths. The single will be featured on the group’s upcoming EP 1997, due out May 19 on Yellow Year Records.

Pr0files – Get it Up

Stylized synthpop act Pr0files first caught P0etry’s attention in 2013 with their debut single, “Call Yourself a Lover.” The LA-based duo, comprised of Danny Sternbaum and Lauren Pardini are longtime friends who came together to make dreamy pop tunes. They’re no strangers to the music circuit though, as both have been involved in separate projects, with Sternbaum composing film scores and Pardini cutting her teeth writing for DJ Khalil’s production team (Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Drake) and Corin Roddick of Purity Ring.

Their new song, “Get it Up” is an upbeat, disco-soaked track that will have you grooving for the weekend in no time. Enjoy this beat below, along with the inaugural track that first enchanted us.

JUDE. – Drive

New independent duo JUDE from Florida have a few singles to their name, but it’s their latest effort (off their forthcoming EP The Bedroom) that has solidified their status as group to watch in 2015. Having drawn comparisons to Lorde (the vocals on “Crystals” are uncanny) and BROODS with prior efforts, the synthpop track “Drive” establishes them as a tour de force in their own right. Pink Feathers – The Feeling’s Gone (ft. SPEAK)

Last week, Portland’s Pink Feathers (aka Liz Anjos) saw the release of her debut EP, Invisible Lines. Produced by Andre Anjos of RAC (you read that right — the duo are a pair), the EP is a four-song collection confected of synthy, sugary pop. The standout track has to be the duet “The Feeling’s Gone” with Austin newcomers (and new Poetry fave), SPEAK. Troupe Gammage’s tenor serves as a nice counterbalance to Liz’s candied vocals, particularly in the coda. Stream below.

HAERTS – Giving Up

After stealing hearts everywhere with the release of their EP, Hemiplegia in 2013 and a host of North American tour dates, HAERTS released their self-titled debut album this September. The Brooklyn-based group revealed several new songs with the release, including our favorite, “Giving Up.” This track shows off what they do best — soaring synth production and rousing vocals (in the vein of Kate Bush) from Nini Fabi that build until the final anthemic chorus swoops in to solidify its greatness. HAERTS is also one of those rare synthpop acts that sound just as good live as in the studio. Those in the DC area will have a chance to see them this Wednesday, 11/26 at 9:30 Club with St. Lucia and The Knocks.

Paperwhite – Gold

After offering up several singles this past year, Brooklyn outfit Paperwhite have finally released their debut EP Magic as of yesterday via Duly Noted Records. The album unveils a couple of new songs, including new track “Gold” below. It’s another shining example of the 80s-inspired synthpop sound the sibling duo Katie and Ben Marshall have been cultivating over the last year. Stream below, along with other standout track from the EP, “Take Me Back.” Looks like a promising future for this brother-sister duo.

Chromeo – Lost On The Way Home (ft. Solange)

On Chromeo‘s latest LP, White Women (released May 2014), the Canadian electro-funk/disco duo teamed up with Solange to create soulful single “Lost On the Way Home” — an 80s-inspired synthy duet about a relationship gone sour. Dave 1 of Chromeo and Solange duel it out on the track, but it’s the gripping vocals of the Knowles songstress that steal the show with her repeated refrain ‘And you know it’s gonna take time’ — which sounds like it was sampled straight out of an 80s pop song.

BROODS – ‘Evergreen’ LP Giveaway

In case you’ve been living under a rock, the NZ duo BROODS released their debut LP Evergreen earlier this month — and in celebration of the occasion we’ve got a few CDs and other goodies to give away. Produced by Joel Little (the not-so-little producer behind Lorde), it’s no wonder that the album debuted at #1 on the charts in New Zealand, as well as earning plaudits on the international stage. The brother-sister duo demonstrated range in the array of singles they released leading up to the album, including the somber “Mother & Father,” the more lighthearted “L.A.F,” and of course standout track, “Bridges.” Fans needn’t fear about the quality of the remainder of the album, however, as evidenced by tracks like “Everytime” below.

To add to their list of accomplishments, the group recently went on tour supporting UK crooner Sam Smith. We had the good fortune of attending their DC show in September, where BROODS effectively warmed up the audience for Sam, who proceeded to melt the crowd with his masterful vocal chops, bashful British charm and powerful pathos. But we digress.
