Arctic Monkeys – Do I Wanna Know?

arctic-monkeys-2013

I remember when the Arctic Monkeys first arrived on the scene in 2006. I was living in France at the time, and I believe the sun was actually setting as the song “When the Sun Goes Down” filled my ears. From that point on, a certain romance* for the group’s effervescent spirit (*and clever song titles) had been seeded.

That’s why it’s acutely exciting that the group is set to release their fifth studio album, AM next month on September 9th. Stream their new single “Do I Wanna Know?” below, and check out the video of an older classic if you’re feeling nostalgic.

Clubfeet – Cape Town (Panama Remix)

clubfeet

Electronic group from Down Under, Panama recently released this remix of Clubfeet’s “Cape Town,” rendering an average synth-pop track from their fellow Aussies into a torrid tropical affair. Infusing the disco number with piano, percussion, and a sick bassline, Panama stirs up a potent combination of chilled out, calypso-laden bliss.

Transport yourself to Cape Town and grab the track GRATIS below.

“everybody buy me a drink, it’s my birthday”

And another one of my favorites from Panama – “It’s Not Over.”

Kings of Leon – Supersoaker

kings_of_leon_press43DDE04

After a two year hiatus, the kings of indie rock (aka KOL) are back! Last week the Oklahoma-bred brothers debuted the first single off their forthcoming album, Mechanical Bull — slated for a September 24th release. Stream the all at once sentimental and feel-good single of the summer, “Supersoaker” below.

Kings of Leon will be performing a benefit concert tonight in Oklahoma City (at the Thunderdome!) with The Flaming Lips to help raise money for the recent tornado victims.

MS MR – Think of You

Screen shot 2013-07-12 at 2.30.36 AM

MS MR has premiered a dreamy new video for their song “Think of You,” from their debut LP Secondhand Rapture — perfectly described by Pitchfork as “deep, thunderous rumblings, celestial twinkling, foggy shrouds, and the sweet clarity of a pastel dawn.”

Directed by BRTHR, the vid takes the 80’s like power-pop ballad and matches the genre in a modern tribute to the old public access television show “TV Party.” The directing duo wanted to create a quirky, lo-fi universe that’s sort of strange, but loveable at the same time. And indeed there’s a lot to love about this video, from the 80’s stylistic flair, to the psychedelic elements and modernistic twists.

Screen shot 2013-07-11 at 12.58.27 AM

Lizzy Plapinger, the vocalist of MS MR calls to mind Florence Welch both visually and in her affective delivery of the song’s pathos — essentially “what it feels like to realize the person you once loved was a toxic bomb of negativity” (h/t to Winnie Cooper).

I still think of you and all the sh*t you put me through
And I know you were wrong.

Bonobo – Know You

Bonobo

The Brooklyn-based and British-born electronic producer Bonobo (aka Simon Green) released new album The North Borders a couple months back, and it’s one you should know. The artfully layered sounds and textured melodies of Green’s music are exemplified on the track below.

Bonobo’s upcoming tour dates can be found on his website here, including a stop at DC’s 930 Club in October.

Thundercat – Heartbreaks + Setbacks

thundercat

I have an affinity for any man who knows how to don feathers — and in this case that man is Stephen Bruner, the bassist/vocalist  known as Thundercat. Co-written and co-produced by Flying Lotus, “Heartbreaks + Setbacks” is the first single off his new album Apocalypse, which comes out July 9th. The composition combines soulful lyrics with a sick bassline that “calls to mind the work of jazz greats like Charles Mingus and Jaco Pastorious, deftly weaving an intricate bass solo into a sonically dense synth-pop arrangement,” according to LiveForTheFunk. Check it out below.

RÜFÜS – Desert Night

RUFUS_YourEDM

Get your Saturday night started off right with RÜFÜS, a new three-piece from Australia. The second single off their upcoming debut album, ATLAS, “Desert Night” is a deliciously textured and irresistible house number. Reaching #1 on the HypeM charts a week ago, house lovers everywhere can look forward to the album dropping August 9th.
