St Tropez – In Pictures

Screen shot 2014-05-29 at 11.37.28 PM

Formed in 2012, St Tropez is a new nostalgic indie pop band based out of Oakland, California. Influenced by a variety of old school genres, including 60’s folk, classic dub and Afrobeat, the retro-loving five-piece released their first single, “In Pictures” in May and is already making a stir on the blogosphere with their unique brand of bittersweet, bleached out pop.

Consisting of members Sanjay Vora (guitar/vocals), Aki Ehara (bass/production), Jeremy Fisch (drums), Lalin St. Juste (vocals), and Tom Lattanand (guitar/keys), St Tropez is currently working on their first and self-produced LP record, set to debut sometime this fall.

If the dreamy, hazy new single is any indication, these guys surely won’t be label-less for long — looking forward to what more the album has to offer. And generous as they are talented, they’re giving away the track as a free download on SoundCloud, so get to steppin’!

RMX ROUNDUP: HAERTS + Avec Sans / Bonobo + SaneBeats / Sam Smith + Soul Clap

AvecSans

Happy Saturday everyone! This week’s edition of Remix Roundup begins with a new rework of HAERTS‘ “Hemiplegia” by the UK act Avec Sans. Having ties to the HAERTS’ bassist Derek McWilliams (Alice Fox of Avec Sans was formerly in a band with him), it made perfect sense that they should put their own spin on “Hemiplegia,” applying their signature synths to transform the original into an uplifting summery mix. Stream below and pick up a free download via their Facebook page. Next up is the more downtempo but still brilliant, percussion-focused remix of Bonobo‘s “Terrapin,” by the young London producer known as SaneBeats — also available for free DL on Soundcloud. Lastly, I leave you with another stunning remix of Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me,” this time from Boston based duo Soul Clap. Dubbing their effort as ‘the Balearic remix,’ Soul Clap slows things down with mesmerizing synths and groovy calypso beats. Stream below.

Bleachers – Shadow

bleachers-press-2014-650-430

Are you looking for a summer soundtrack? “Shadow” might be a good candidate. Jack Antonoff is best known as the lead guitarist of Fun and is currently working on a new venture called Bleachers. He describes the project as “a psychotic alter-ego situation,” reflected in the form of catchy, indie-pop tunes. Bleachers will be on the festival circuit this summer in both the US and UK. Stream the single from the forthcoming EP below.

The Night VI – Sienna

The Night VI

The Night VI is a new band based out of London that’s amassed a fair amount of praise for their organic instrumentation and minimalist heartfelt sound. While not quite hitting breakthrough-level exposure yet, the six-piece is on their way with their latest single “Sienna.” It’s an uptempo, albeit soulful song told from the perspective of a lover scorned—sung from the crystalline vocals of Sophie-Rose Harper. Stream below.

Paolo Nutini – Better Man

The Scottish award-winning singer-songwriter Paolo Nutini released his third studio album via Atlantic this April. Critics have hailed his new effort, Caustic Love as a more sophisticated and substantive follow-up to its predecessors. In the interest of total transparency however, I will confess that the following video of Nutini singing new single “Better Man” backstage at Café de la Danse in Paris served as my introduction to the swoon-inducing Scot. Thus — all earlier efforts and preconceived notions aside — the raw, Jeff Buckley-worthy crooning and guitar-strumming stylings as showcased on the acoustic rendition below has rendered me a hopeless Paolo proselyte.

RMX ROUNDUP: Say Lou Lou + Yannis / RÜFÜS / Moderat x Lykki Li + Laz Arus

modelyk

Starting off this week’s Remix Roundup is a rework of the Scandi-Aussie group Say Lou Lou, featured on POETRY earlier this week for their latest synthpop efforts. Yannis Philippakis‎ from Foals has revamped “Everything We Touch” from their soon to be released EP and the marriage works perfectly. Next up is another electronic gem from Australian collective RÜFÜS, who just released the ‘Night Version’ of their track “We Left,” the first song they ever wrote. Stream the dark albeit danceable number below and if you like what you hear, check out their latest album ATLAS. And finally, a mashup of Moderat‘s “A New Error” and Lykki Li‘s “I Follow Rivers” by UK’s Laz Arus. Francesco Torrisi, the Italian-born but London based producer has whipped up a fine piece of deep house ear-candy with wobbly synths and seductive vocals. Listen below and pick up a free DL over on Soundcloud.

Say Lou Lou – Peppermint

say-lou-lou

Say Lou Lou, the Swedish sister pop outfit are releasing a new EP, Everything We Touch June 2. The twin sisters, Miranda and Elektra Kilbey are hard at work on their debut album—due out later this year—and have been generating buzz by continually sharing new material along the way. Stream their new ballad “Peppermint” off the eminent EP below.

RMX ROUNDUP: Young Summer + backstroke. / Small Black + Dave Harrington / Gotye + Supermayer

youngsummer

Time for a Remix Roundup, Memorial Day weekend style edition! First up, I’m digging this backstroke. remix of DC’s own Young Summer. A fellow DC resident, backstroke. takes the affective original (“Waves That Rolled You Under”) and adds a lush layer of bass and electronic beats. Young Summer’s EP Fever Dream was released last June, 2013 and I’m loving this local talent. Next we have Dave Harrington of Darkside’s retouch of “Lines of Latitude,” the new single from Brooklyn’s Small Black. Although I’ve not featured them on the blog before, Small Black have built up quite the following for their subdued, synthy lovesick pop sound. By upping the tempo and looping the synths, Harrington magnifies the original (off their recent Real People EP via Jagjaguwar) into a dreamy, sun-drenched reworkcurrently on repeat in my playlist. And lastly, after having recently watched Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, I stumbled upon this punched up remix of Gotye’s “Hearts a Mess” from German production duo Supermayer, off the single’s remixes EP. Get lost in these almost-summer creations below.

It’s not all the time
Just when it strikes
The lines I crossed for you

tUnE-yArDs – Water Fountain

tune-yards_wide

tUnE-yArDs, the peculiar two-piece out of Oakland put out their wildly imaginative third album, Nikki Nack via 4AD earlier this month. For those not familiar with the duo — consisting of New England native Merrill Garbus (vocals, drums, ukelele) and Nate Brenner (electric bass) — take a listen to the lead single off the album “Water Fountain” below. Weaving African polyrhythms and Haitian drum beats throughout their music, Garbus and Brenner achieve a sound that is refreshingly unorthodox, progressively playful and entirely their own. Their track “Bizness,” from previous album Whokill is another great example of their creative genius.

tUnE-yArDs will be playing two shows at DC’s 930 Club, June 13-14 with Sylvan Esso supporting.
