Porches – Hour

prchs

Porches is the project of singer-songwriter and nascent producer Aaron Maine, whose forthcoming album Pool on new label home Domino marks a major step forward for the New York artist. The LP — due out February 5 was written and recorded almost entirely in his Manhattan apartment, and mixed by Chris Coady (Beach House, Grizzly Bear, Tobias Jesso Jr.) in LA. Although Maine is avowedly drawn to the melancholic experiences in life, he also believes in finding the beauty in them. “I want people to feel dark, beautiful and strong when they hear this new record,” he says, “I want them to fall in love.”

That’s easy to do with his standout track “Hour,” a stunning synth-driven song with haunting harmonies supplied by his longtime collaborator and girlfriend, Greta Kline aka Frankie Cosmos.

Porches will be embarking on an extensive 2016 North American tour, starting March 9 in our very own Washington, DC. See full tour schedule below.

The Arcs – Outta My Mind

unnamed (6)

If you haven’t heard by now, The Arcs is the side project of The Black Keys‘ Dan Auerbach. The supergroup–which boasts the talents of Richard Swift, Leon Michels, Homer Steinweiss, Nick Movshon, along with contributions from Kenny Vaughan, Mariachi Flor de Toloache and Tchad Blake–came together to create the critically acclaimed album Yours, Dreamily. “Right from the drop, Yours, Dreamily, ignites like a cigarette flicked on a stream of gasoline,” declared NPR Music. The LP was recorded in roughly two weeks through spontaneous, informal sessions throughout the country, and spans from garage-rock to psychedelia to the blues. See for yourself by spinning the record’s reverb-soaked first single “Outta My Mind” below.

As part of the album tour the collective will be performing two shows in DC next week–December 14 and 15 at 9:30 Club.

Tigers Are Bad For Horses – Messenger

tabfh_FINAL

At CCP we love all things local, and we especially love when local entities demonstrate real potential. That’s why when we first heard the sounds of DC-based Tigers Are Bad For Horses, we immediately agreed to feature their new EP. Today marks the release of the alt-pop duo’s debut EP, TABFH, the first compilation since their formation in 2014. Comprised of Mellen and Lyell, Tigers began when the former sang on one of Lyell’s film scoring projects. They quickly became a musical dyad, informed by a range of influences from Bonobo to Bon Iver — but eventually forging their own blend of piano-infused, jazz-influenced electronic pop with multi-layered production and lilting vocals.

Tigers Are Bad For Horses will be celebrating the release of their debut EP in DC tonight, and headlining Rock & Roll Hotel December 19 so if you’re in the area come on out to support this local talent.

BØRNS – The Emotion

LA-based act BØRNS, aka Garrett Borns is a rising new talent who’s made a splash for his sunkissed indie-pop hooks. The newcomer, who originally hails from Michigan relocated to LA where he wrote (with heavyweight producers like Emile Haynie) and finally debuted his highly-anticipated album Dopamine last month. No doubt his new surroundings affected the singer’s sound, as a press release calls his music “pure Southern California in a bottle.” Listen to the heartfelt track “The Emotion” below for a sample of his sensibilities.

People in the DMV can catch BØRNS live at Rams Head Live on December 1.

[VIDEO]: Beat Connection – Illusion

unnamed (1)

Beat Connection released their long-awaited sophomore album, Product 3 last month on ANTI- Records. Since their formation in 2010, the Seattle-based band has grown from a duo to a quartet and is currently comprised of Reed Juenger, Jarred Katz, Tom Eddy, and Mark Hunter, who are all accomplished instrumentalists. Together they create bright, exuberant beats and rhythms that blend together in seamless and satisfying ways that still manage to surprise.

We featured one of the album tracks “Illusion” back in September, but since then they’ve released a seriously slick video for the effort, featuring the moves of renowned flex dancer Brixx. Watch the video below and pick up the LP Product 3, teeming with more electronic synth jams on iTunes. Beat Connection is currently on tour in support of the album, performing at DC9 this Thursday, November 19 (more tour dates below).

Flock of Dimes – Prison Bride

flockofdimes

Jenn Wasner, with her plethora of side projects is one of our favorite female vocalists in the biz right now. As founder of solo endeavor Flock of Dimes, one half of Wye Oak and Dungeonesse—not to mention purveyor of dreamy covers—it’s safe to say that the Baltimore chanteuse is keeping busy. She’ll be performing as Flock of Dimes at 9:30 Club tonight in support of EL VY, and in concert with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra tomorrow evening (November 12) for a special performance with Andy Stack, the other half of Wye Oak.

Stream the deliciously frenetic Flock of Dimes effort “Prison Bride,” plus a Dungeonesse cut for a sample of Wasner’s creative whimsy and plush vocals.

[GIVEAWAY]: Wild Child & Elliot Moss @ 9:30 Club on 11/13

bestlight

We’re excited to announce we’ll be giving a pair of tickets away to Wild Child and Elliot Moss this coming Friday, November 13 at 9:30 Club. Wild Child have been featured on CokeCanPoetry in the past, as the endearing Austin-based group is one of our favorite indie-folk live acts. Read more about Wild Child in our feature on them here and whilst you listen, enter to win tickets to the show by sending a tweet (or retweet) to @CokeCanPoetry.

Warming the crowd for Wild Child is a rising new talent — a 21-year-old multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and visual artist named Elliot Moss. Moss released his debut album Highspeeds on Grand Jury earlier this year, which was mixed, produced and recorded at Moss’ home studio. It’s an impressive and mature debut from such a young artist, whose falsetto vocals and emotive electronic sounds have been compared to Bon Iver. Listen to the luminous track “Best Light” below for a preview of what Moss has to offer.

Sure to be a dazzling show all around so enter to win today — we will reveal the winner Friday morning!

Youth Lagoon – The Knower

YL

This past September, Youth Lagoon released his third studio album, Savage Hills Ballroom — an effort he’s touted as his most introspective yet. YL, the project of Idaho-born artist Trevor Powers is well known for his boundless creativity and idiosyncratic sound, but the LP’s lead single “The Knower” indeed appears to indicate some kind of evolution from Powers, having recently dealt with loss of a loved one and other major life changes.

The threnody definitely has a dark thread, as Powers reflects on the human capacity for self-deception and self-destructive behaviors: “Oh, everybody wants to think that they’re good at heart, when they’re full of hate,” he sings. The arrangement starts out as with muted keys and skittering percussion, eventually introducing illustrious trumpets, a triumphant horn section and a bevy of synths for a majestic sort of effect. Watch the fiery video for “The Knower” — and for a slightly different mood hear Noah Hyde‘s enchanted remix of YL’s earlier effort “Daydream” below.

Youth Lagoon will be performing at 9:30 Club this Sunday, November 1 with Moon King supporting so if you’re in the area don’t miss the chance to see this innovative creature live.

I’ve been underneath the canopy, lost in a spell
I shut up every time you look at me, but you can’t tell
In skin, the psyche has a tendency to trust what’s untrue
I’ve been underneath the canopy, wasting for you

Wild Ones – Show Me Islands

WildOnes

As dreampop outfits go, Portland’s Wild Ones are one of the dreamiest. They stole our hearts with their 2013 debut Keep It Safe — an album brimming with romantic cuts like “Paia” — and in August released their new EP Heatwave. Listen to one of their more upbeat tracks, “Show Me Islands” from the EP, showcasing Danielle Sullivan’s winsome vocals below.

Currently on tour with Pure Bathing Culture, DC locals can catch Wild Ones opening for PBC tonight at DC9 Nightclub. We can attest that the quintet are just as alluring live as their studio manifestations.
