RMX ROUNDUP: Shakarchi & Stranéus + HNNY / Bag Raiders / Hundred Waters + Shigeto

shigeto

Welcome to another edition of Remix Roundup, a segment in which we bring you the latest and greatest mixes circulating the interwebs. First up is a refreshing upbeat edit of Swedish duo Shakarchi & Stranéus‘ “Hissmusik” from fellow Swedish producer HNNY (pronounced honey). The track amounts to insanely infectious dance music, complete with playful bass, an addictive vocal hook and even a flute solo. Treat your ears to this aural nectar below.

In keeping with this breezy and convivial vibe, we take a short remix interlude to bring you this blithe electronic track from Sydney’s Bag Raiders that we’ve had up our sleeves for some time. The now LA-based duo, Chris Stracey and Jack Glass import the tropics with “Nairobi,” an instrumental track infused with marimba melodies and conga rhythms that make us anxious for summer. Although the track was released on an EP of the same name last year, the group is allegedly at work on their second album.

Lastly, Michigan producer Shigeto recently was tasked with reworking a Hundred Waters track for their Remix album of The Moon Rang Like a Bell. While “Cavity” is a dark and spectral tune perfect in it’s own right, the Ghostly International-signed artist manages to add some levity to the original in a way that doesn’t detract — but rather gives it a new form entirely.

Exquisite instrumentation with Shigeto’s signature chimes and an intricate melody make for a revivifying final product, that sends our hearts soaring when the looping begins around 1:35 minutes in. Stream this Little Dragon-esque delicacy below, and be sure to pick up the entire Remix LP on iTunes while you’re at it.

The Kite String Tangle – Stone Cold (ft. Tiana Khasi)

TKST1

In lieu of a Remix Roundup this week, we thought to share the latest track and accompanying remixes from Australian electronic producer The Kite String Tangle. Off his debut EP Vessel, “Stone Cold” is an affecting duet between TKST (aka Danny Harley) and Australian singer Tiana Khasi. Stirring vocals with a backdrop of tropical, melancholic synths set the tone for a ballad about that enduring theme of a love gone wrong.

TKST also released a “Stone Cold” Remix EP last month, including standout mixes from AMTRAC and KILTER. We like the juxtaposition of these two in particular, as AMTRAC’s version — utilizing his minimalist deep house production techniques — amplifies the drama of the original by focusing solely on the female’s side of the story.

Meanwhile, fellow Aussie producer KILTER highlights the male vocals/perspective, in addition to a strong drum and bass line. Listen to these two back-to-back for an interesting study in parallels.

I Know Leopard – Hold This Tight

IKnowLeopard

The land of down under has been generous with their musical offerings these past few years, and I Know Leopard is no exception. The Sydney-based quintet make wondrous dreampop, with a sprinkling of indie, alt rock and baroque pop. “Hold This Tight” takes the title for standout track from their debut EP, Illumina released earlier this year. It’s a well-crafted, nostalgic indie ballad with layered guitar and starry synths lead by Luke O’Loughlin’s stirring vocals. Clearly, these guys know how to write a hook — listen below and be on the look out for more of their work.

Vance Joy – Mess Is Mine

dreamyourlifeaway

Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy rocketed to international success this past year with the help of breakout single, “Riptide,” which rose to the top of the HypeM charts within hours of release and the Billboard Alternative Songs chart soon after. The indie folk artist (born James Keogh) abandoned a career in law to pursue a more creative path, playing open mic venues in Melbourne until eventually scoring a deal with Atlantic Records.

His debut album, Dream Your Life Away released this September is pure raw folky goodness with infectious hooks and pop influences. Listen to his single “Mess Is Mine” along with “Riptide” below, and pick up the album on iTunes.

Vance will be playing to a sold-out audience at DC’s 930 Club this Saturday, October 25.

Seekae – The Stars Below

Seekae1

We’re basically obsessed with all things Future Classic, which hosts the likes of Chet Faker, Chrome Sparks, and Flume — and Seekae, the up-and-coming trio from Sydney is no exception. They dropped their debut album The Worry in September, containing downtempo tracks such as “The Stars Below” (below), and the textured “Test & Recognise” that Flume introduced to the masses with his epic rework. In contrast from the latter, “The Stars Below” is more of a progressive ballad (or anti-ballad), bathed in seductive synths that hold you in suspense until the desolate ending. Stream below, and pick up the full LP on iTunes.

Banoffee – Let’s Go To The Beach

banoffee

Banoffee‘s back with a new single—which, while part of her debut EP released in August—wasn’t officially dropped on Soundcloud until this week. Refusing to conform to any one genre, the Australian artist’s sound is a fresh eclectic blend of 80s synthpop and 90s urban soul in what may best be described as new wave R&B.

Lighter than Banoffee’s previous offerings, “Let’s Go To The Beach” is a bouncy, ebullient track imbued with her staple syncopated beats and layered synths. The track really takes off at 1:53, breaking out into a sportive and rollicking beach number (seasonable in Australia although not so much here).

Hemisphere of origin aside, you can catch Banoffee performing stateside at CMJ’s Music Festival happening this month in New York. Check out her schedule below, and purchase her album (via Two Bright Lakes) on iTunes.

Banoffee CMJ Dates:
10.22 – Aussie Beat Pie – Santos Party House – 8:50-9:15PM
10.23 – College Day – Rosenthal Pavillion – 9:45-9:55AM
10.24 – The dFM + Vitalic Noise – Mondrian Soho Hotel – 7:00-7:25PM
10.24 – The Green Room – Knitting Factory – 9:00-9:25PM

Chet Faker x WKND – Lover

chet_faker

Just in time for your weekend, WKND has dropped a new house remix of Australian artist Chet Faker‘s cover of Sonia Dada’s “Lover (You Don’t Treat Me No Good).” The cover was a song that Chet originally performed for Triple J’s popular “Like A Version” segment this past July, which you can watch here. Recasting the bluesy cover into a bumpin’ house number, the German producer turns up the heat with a sped-up tempo, banging basslines and unexpected tropical influences.

Get this beat in your headphones today, as WKND is giving it out for FREE on his SoundCloud page.

On another note, Chet has been blowing up this year since the inception of his 2014 debut LP, Built on Glass via Future Classic. Last year the soulful musician also teamed up with Flume on the dope track “Drop the Game,” available for streaming below. You can catch Chet stateside this fall at NYC’s Webster Hall October 16.

Mammals – Move Slower

Mammals1

Mammals is the musical brainchild of Sydney-based artist Guy Brown. Also consisting of Henry Wells, Nathaniel Joyce and PJ Wolf, the four-piece released their highly anticipated EP Animalia last month. They supported Of Monsters and Men on their Australian Tour, and recently collaborated on a track with Goldroom. Transport to the Northern Beaches with  “Move Slower,” a downtempo tune with soft vocals supported by an atmospheric soundscape.

Panama – Stay Forever

Panama

On the heels of their debut North American tour, Panama have released another dreamy pop song as a free download for all of the support they’ve received. The three minute anthem from the Sydney outfit is a shimmering synth-soaked track with a minimal sound that is reminiscent of M83. If you need something to bliss out to during Labor Day weekend — or accompany your beach ambitions — then look no further. Stream below and pick up the track on SoundCloud today.

RMX ROUNDUP: Seekae + Flume / MNEK x Disclosure + XYconstant / Mazde

Seekae-Flume

Today’s installment of Remix Roundup begins with a fantastic new re-work from Flume, the wunderkind electronic producer from Australia. Taking the track “Test & Recognise” from the Sydney trio Seekae (of Future Classic), label-mate Flume transforms the original into a progressive and wonderfully discordant electro-affair. Stream below and download for free via SoundCloud.

Next is XYconstant‘s deep house remix of Disclosure‘s “White Noise” released this past year. Making use of a subdued bassline and distorted vocals, XYconstant achieves a mesmeric, groove-laden remix ready for any dance floor. Get a free DL by liking his facebook page.

And lastly, in keeping the Disclosure train flowing — as well as the fact that I pretty much enjoy this song in all of its incarnations — is the redux version of “Help Me Lose My Mind” by German producer Mazde. Flume-esque in its production and Cyril Hahn-like in pitch, this slowed down edit is a different take on the original that is a must listen for Disclosure/London Grammar fans. This one is also available for free download, so energize yourself for your Saturday night and go snag all three.
