HONNE – Top To Toe

HONNE

HONNE has been on the top of the blogosphere charts for some time now, but it wasn’t until we heard “Top To Toe” that we fell head over heel. The UK duo make soulful, sensuous music along the lines of Chet Faker or SOHNHonne is a Japanese word describing a person’s true feelings or desires, which in the culture is often contrasted with tatemae — the Japanese word for public behavior — to highlight the dichotomy between the two.

In light of this, honne (本音) seems like a worthy title for the London duo’s brand of late night, swoon-inducing electro-soul. Take a listen to “Top To Toe” off their EP Coastal Love, released this month below.

RMX ROUNDUP: The Drums + RAC / Sam Feldt + EDX / José González + Dino Soccio

José-González-Let-It-Carry-You-Dino-Soccio-Remix

Kicking off this installment of Remix Roundup is a new one from RAC‘s repertoire, a remix of The Drums “Kiss Me Again.” RAC takes the surfy original (from the Brooklyn duo’s latest album Encyclopedia) to new levels with layered synths and a drum machine, giving it an overall ’80s feel. Regarding the selection, RAC said, “The Drums have been somewhat of an obsession of mine. When the opportunity came up to do a remix, I had to do it.” Pick up a free download of this jubilant mix on Soundcloud.

Speaking of the ’80s, if you’re a product of the era with a predilection for ’90s pop, you’ll most likely recognize this next one. Veteran Swiss-based producer EDX has done a retake of Sam Feldt‘s cover of the 1993 classic, “Show Me Love” by Robin S. We loved the original summery reimagination from Dutch producer Sam Feldt, and EDX elevates the tropical house track to a dance-floor ready jam. Sam Feldt’s version will be out June 1 via Spinnin’ Records.

Last but not least, we lead you out with this hauntingly eloquent rework of José González‘ single, “Let It Carry You” from LA producer/DJ Dino Soccio. Soccio manages to retain the airy organic feel of the original (that won accolades from the man González himself), while simultaneously adding a chillwavey nu-disco backdrop. Let this resplendent edit carry you to transcendence just after the four-minute mark.

[CCP Interview]: The Landing on the Miracle of Human Existence & the Relative Absurdity of Anxiety

thelanding

New York space-pop project known as The Landing is a one-man act, who thus far in his career has mostly been cloaked in enigma (by choice). What is known about the solo artist is that he’s a classically trained musician, who has scored films and composed original pieces for orchestra. He first sparked listeners’ attention with his array of astral creations contained in his 2014 debut, We Are, and is now gearing up to release his follow-up EP this June.

In advance of the big reveal, The Landing was generous enough to let us in on the optimistic philosophy and perpetual state of wonderment that underscores his creative inspiration.

How would you define your particular genre of music, and who are some of your artistic influences?

I’ve been branding my music as “space-pop,” which comes from a genre that emerged in the ’50s and ’60s now referred to as “Space Age Pop.” Composers of this time, Esquivel, Dick Hyman, Bob Thompson and the like, were responding to what was happening to the world around them at the height of the space race, when we were altering our perception of the possible, and in the process redefining what it means to be human; now a spacefaring species.

You can hear the sentiment of this time in this genre of music, not just the “other worldly” or exotic nature of it, but the optimism and hope and confidence of the era. I take a lot from these composers, not just sonically but in how engaged they were with the events of their time. Today I see a world that shows just as much promise in taking the next giant leap for humanity and I only want to be an active participant in the journey ahead.

So what informs the philosophy behind your music?

Human ambition and the human condition. Essentially, us and our efforts to find our place in the Cosmos, both literally as in the location of our solar system within our galaxy, our galaxy within the visible Universe, and spiritually as in what our very existence says about the Universe in which we inhabit.

TheLanding

We loved the EP, We Are that came out May of last year, particularly the lead track “Anxieties.” Could you speak to us about the inspiration for that song?

I appreciate it, and am so thankful that people have found something they connect with from the EP. Anxiety, I believe, is what happens when we lose sight of what’s really going on. Of course everyone has things they worry about, but I’ve found that if you stop and think about how the ground you’re standing on just is a small patch of land on a giant spherical Earth, and that our Sun is just a another star in the sky that happens to be really really close, that ALL of this, everything you see, used to be a huge cloud of gas expelled from a distant star long since dead, and now it’s you, and me, and everything we know, you arrive at a place of perspective where nothing can reach you, and your anxieties just fall away. It’s a miracle that any of this is possible, that this conversation is even taking place! From this cosmologically accurate point of view, what really is there to worry about?

You’ve hinted at making your live shows more of an ‘experience’ than simply a performance. Has that been developed and if so, what does that entail?

The live show is definitely still evolving, and obviously playing shows in New York City not every venue is capable of implementing these “experiences.” The main idea though is to get everyone at the show invested in the message, and to allow the audience to feel that they are as much a part of the experience as the music that’s happening on stage. So far I’ve implemented things like masked dancers that interact with the crowd and projected imagery, but I’m excited to see where it grows.

As are we! Stream The Landing’s second single “The Comes The Wonder” off of the forthcoming EP, How Strange To Be below.

Wolf Alice – Bros

wolf alice

Wolf Alice is four-piece band from London who’ve received a lot of acclaim this year from tastemakers such as BBC Sound, NPR, Hype Machine and KCRW for their eclectic mix of folk, grunge, and electronics with a ’90s alt-rock twist. Their debut album, My Love Is Cool, was produced by Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, Foals) and is slated for release June 23 via Dirty Hit / RCA Records.

The second single off the record, “Bros” is a mellifluous reworked version of an earlier demo from 2013. Speaking to NPR about the track, vocalist Ellie Roswell said, “‘Bros’ is sentimental song for us. [It’s] taken on a new form as we have grown with it. It’s a simple ode to childhood friendship and imagination.” Stream “Bros” and check out their North American tour dates below.

Feki – Remember

Feki1

Rising Australian producer Feki recently released an original single called “Remember,” which caught our ears for its smooth and soulful production. Fuse future beats with R&B grooves, plus pitch-shifted vocal samples from Whitney Houston’s “It’s Not Right But It’s Okay” and you have a downtempo dish done right. Stream below and pick up a free download on Soundcloud.

Life In Film – It’s What Happens Next That Matters Most

Life In Film

Produced by the legendary Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths, Morrissey), Life In Film is the buzzworthy new band from across the pond that sound like a cross between The Arctic Monkeys and The Kooks. The London quartet scored a supporting gig with The Rolling Stones in the recent past, were chosen by Christopher Bailey for international performances with Burberry, and are currently on tour with fellow British darlings The Wombats. For a slice of their work, listen to the single “It’s What Happens Next That Matters Most” off their debut album Here It Comes, which drops May 5 next week.

Life In Film is opening for The Wombats at DC’s 9:30 Club tomorrow eve — so be sure to get there early if you have tix. And for old times’ sake, check out the vid of one of our favorite vintage Wombat tracks, “Let’s Dance to Joy Division.”

Quigley – Lost Again

Quigley

Newly arrived artist on the scene Quigley makes quite the impression with just one listen. The LA songstress creates unconventional electropop in the same vein as female vocalists such as GrimesEmpress Of, and Banoffee, with a bit of Purity Ring‘s futurism as well. Her latest single “Lost Again” is a compelling, chimerical confection that will be featured on her forthcoming EP. Written, produced and mixed by Quigley herself, the debut album Initium drops May 8.

Day Wave – Drag

Day Wave

As fans of the indie act Carousel, we were delighted to learn that one half of the duo, Jackson Phillips was embarking on a solo project known as Day Wave. The Oakland based artist has already accrued a combined 500,000 plays on Soundcloud over the last year with his first two releases, and the latest single “Drag” follows the same sonic trend as previous efforts with its ruminative, lo-fi surf-pop sound. Introspective lyrics paired with light guitar strums — along with an intrinsic post-punk nature and a hint of shoegaze set his sound apart from the more synth-leaning Carousel. Listen below.
