RMX Roundup: Olympic Ayres / Foals vs Booka Shade / Sky Ferreira + Cid Rim

Sky Ferrieira Performs At Scala

For today’s installment of Remix Roundup, we have three completely different but individually stellar tracks in their own right. First off is Sydney duo Olympic Ayres, who dropped the upbeat electro-gem “Take Flight” a few weeks back. While not actually a remix, this electronic original will have you taking flight in no time, and is due out on their forthcoming EP Leisureplex later this year. Next up is the sexy mashup of Foals “My Number” over Booka Shade’s “Charlotte,” by fellow Australian artist RÜFÜS. Grab the free download here, and catch them at U Street Music Hall March 27 if you’re in DC. Last but not least is the latest from Austrian producer Cid Rim, an electric remix of Sky Ferreira’s “You’re Not The One” replete with arpeggios, shiny vocals over a choppy chorus, and a punchy bass line — the stuff good remixes are made of. Stream all three below.

Screen shot 2014-02-22 at 1.21.10 PM

It’s not often that I go to post about an artist, only to discover that they are playing in my locale that very night. That is in fact, the case here with the Southern Californian duo Bixel Boys. Bringing their tropical house vibe to DC’s U Street Music Hall tonight, their latest remix of The Crystal Method’s new track “Over It” is a synthy and somehow summery twist on the the classic TCM sound. Singles Bar: Valentine’s Edition — Lane 8 / TEEMID / Nicolas Jaar

nj1

Whether you intend on celebrating Valentine’s this year or plan on canceling the holiday all together, today’s roundup of electronic servings can be enjoyed regardless of romantic status. First up is San Francisco’s Lane 8, aka Daniel Goldstein’s newly released deep house production “The One,” featuring vocals by Patrick Baker. Also, French producer TEEMID has teamed up with Canadian singer-songwriter Daniela Andrade to cover Flight Facilities‘ “Crave You.” TEEMID’s take on the classic dance track is a sexy and refreshing rendering — pick up this pure cover gold for free by following the link on Soundcloud. The last one I’ll leave you with is an oldie but a goodie from house favorite Nicolas Jaar, one half of the New York duo Darkside. Sampling from The Searcher’s “Love Potion No. 9,” his slow-building edit “Stay in Love” is a shimmery and deliciously addictive disco-y number that will make you want to procure some of this mysterious elixir…

Gilligan Moss – Choreograph

choreograph

Every once in awhile, a musical composition comes along that catches you off guard and has the potential to completely alter the music landscape. Such is the case with Chicagoan Gilligan’s Moss’s single “Choregraph,” a song so distinct and variegated in style that it immediately commands your attention and calls for further listening. Syncopated rhythms and coruscating textures transport you to a totally unexpected and dazzling place 3:30 minutes in. Pick up a free DL of this intelligent piece of work via Soundcloud stat.

Jagwar Ma – Man I Need

jagwar ma

Noel Gallagher has declared himself a fan of Jagwar Ma — the dance rock duo whose music he deemed more important than an Oasis reformation. And no wonder — the Aussie’s debut album, Howlin’ is replete with energy, synths and chemistry. On the album track “Man I Need,” Gabriel Winterfield’s vocals and the structure of the riffs seem to roll along in unison with one another. Stream the single, along with Andy Buchan’s free edit below.

Note: It was just announced that Jagwar Ma will be performing at Coachella this year!

BIG DATA – Dangerous

bigdata

Brooklynites Alan Wilkins and Daniel Armbruster of Big Data first caught my attention with their track “Dangerous,” off their debut EP 1.0 released October 1. Formed out of a mutual distrust for technology, the paranoid duo “explore the ever-increasing relationship between man and machine, and more specifically how the internet and social media have reshaped the human experience.” Magnetic bass combined with four-to-the-floor beats create the perfect psychedelic space for some paranoia-induced dancing.

Daft Punk – “Instant Crush” ft. Julian Casablancas

daftpunk

Daft Punk has released a new video for their track “Instant Crush” – featuring Julian Casablancas of the Strokes fame – from their LP Random Access Memories (surely you’ve heard of it?). And because I largely dismissed the album, yearning for the days of old DP (yes, I have music-snobbish moments), I hadn’t heard the track before now.

I’m glad I finally did, however — because this track is classic Daft Punk with a sound on which I developed an instant crush. 😉

Tomas Barfod – “November Skies” ft. Nina Kinert

saltonsea-620x620

Snowy day in the district. And although December skies are upon us, this track from Copenhagen producer Tomas Barfod seems like the perfect airy backdrop for a winter wonderland. Stream “November Skies” off his latest LP Salton Sea and pick up a FREE download on Soundcloud below.

And if that weren’t enough, check out his rework of Bon Iver’s “Re: Stacks.”
