The finest electronic tracks often sample an earlier hit song, and such is the case with scholar‘s latest effort, “Lovin You.” The Brisbane-based production duo consisting of Luke Cuerel and Nick Kirk claim they “were looking for a more upbeat, sample driven follow up to [their] last single ‘Daylight,’ something a bit bigger with bright, lush tones.”

Settling on Strike‘s ’90s smash dance single “U Sure Do” for the sample — a track which actually draws from a Donna Allen song — “Lovin You” replaces the original uptempo dance beat with with a blissed out, synth-washed tropical soundscape. The exquisite end result is a lesson on sampling done right. Stream below and download the track for free on scholar’s Soundcloud.

James Vincent McMorrow – How To Waste A Moment

Veering from his usual tender, airy alt-folk fare, James Vincent McMorrow has shared a new song that steers towards a more tense and serpentine electronic sound. While the Irish singer-songwriter doesn’t have plans to include it in a record at this time, he chose to release the mesmerizing single as a one-off, as the thought of wasted moments was apparently plaguing him when he wrote it. He notes on his Soundcloud page: “I recorded it with tempo because life to me is tempo, it’s rarely slow. This song is the connect from where I was, to where I’m going to be very soon.”

We can’t wait to see where that will be. In the meantime — stream “How To Waste A Moment,” along with the softer yet still exquisite effort “Red Dust” off McMorrow’s 2014 LP Post Tropical below.

Mura Masa – Lovesick Fuck

Mura Masa‘s latest track, “Lovesick Fuck” was released a few months back — but has enjoyed a resurgence of sorts on the blogosphere this past week. It makes sense given its sax-y, summery vibes, steel drums and enticing vocal loops. The 19-year-old UK producer, alleged heartbreaker and beat-slayer, Alex Crossan falls somewhere between Ben Khan and Jai Paul with his production chops, which are demonstrated on his recent EP Someday Somewhere. RATATAT – Abrasive

RATATAT are ready to make a return with the release of their first new album in five years, Magnifique. The Brooklyn duo, guitarist Mike Stroud and producer Evan Mast have shared two singles in advance of the LP, which drops July 17 va XL Recordings. True to form, their new single “Abrasive” showcases the elaborate electronic synths and guitar work the two-piece is known for. Stream below.

Time for another Remix Roundup, a semi-biweekly segment in which we bring you the best new mixes and electronic tracks currently in our rotation. First up is the new single from RÜFÜS, the Australian act who are getting ready to release their sophomore album and follow-up to Atlas. The Sydney trio make dark, hypnotic electronic jams that we — and the large amount of fans they’ve amassed — can’t get enough of. Stream “You Were Right” below.

Speaking of artists people can’t get enough of, it’s been a banner year for Will Phillips, the gifted UK producer professionally known as Tourist. He won a Grammy for co-writing Sam Smith‘s smash hit “Stay With Me,” and has collaborated with a number of big name artists. While his take on CHVRCHES synthpop anthem “Lies” isn’t new, it feels like a good time to revisit one of his first major mixes. Stripping back the original into a slow-burning, piano-backed ballad, Tourist keeps the focus on Lauren Mayberry‘s vocals, which are masterfully layered and pitch-shifted at points to potent effect.

At last, we have a new one from Daniele di Martino, the German DJ/producer who has thoroughly impressed us with his intense, sun-drenched rendition of Tora‘s hit track “Jaigantic.” The more subdued original comes from Australian quintet Tora’s 2014 EP, Eat The Sun. With the fervid beats and bass Martino infuses — along with the yearning vocals — this entrancing revision is truly outstanding. LANKS – Hold Me Closer

Australian producer Will Cuming, aka LANKS released his sophomore EP Banquet last week and if woozy electronic production is your thing, the six-track collection should be added to your listening library stat. Mixed by Andrei Eremin (Oscar Key Sung, Chet Faker), the EP contains a dreamy set of downtempo numbers laced in intricately woven melodies and moody vocals. With its guitar strums and beckoning synths, “Hold Me Closer” is our pick for best track — hear it below.

Rudimental – Rumour Mill (ft. Anne-Marie & Will Heard)

In anticipation of their forthcoming album We the Generation, powerhouse UK electronic act Rudimental has shared the official second single off the LP. “Rumour Mill” is a vocal duet between between rising London singers Anne-Marie and Will Heard. We’ve heard Heard (hah) before on Tourist‘ track “I Can’t Keep Up,” and he continues to entice us with his seductive and broody vocals. The effort is a feel-good, energetic house number that will make you want to dance all up in your car, much like the video below. Look out for Rudimental’s album to drop September 18 via Major Tom’s/Big Beat, and scope out their upcoming U.S. tour dates below.

RMX ROUNDUP: Gavin Turek + TOKiMONSTA / AYER + TKDJS / Whitney Houston x Halogen

It’s time for another Remix Roundup, and this week we’ve got a full line-up of soul-powered, dance-packed mixes. First up is a retake of a track by disco’s new pop princess, Gavin Turek. Having released her single “Frontline” this spring, the dance homage to Donna Summers has now been given the remix treatment by TOKiMONSTA. TOKi, who is one of our favorite female producers in the biz dials up the drama and dazzling deep house vibes on the original, while keeping Turek’s invigorating vox at the forefront. The remix package for this track drops June 26 via iheartcomix’s new label 1INFINITY.

Next is a rework taken from AYER‘s new EP, In My Headphones. The Brooklyn artist, who’s been featured on our remix segment before has crafted quite the soulful electropop song with the eponymous single off the EP. Fellow Brooklyn group TKDJS turn the track into an energetic house number replete with dark synths and deep bass lines. Pick up a free download for your headphones here.

Last but not least, we’re throwing it back with a spectacular rework of Whitney Houston‘s iconic track, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” God knows how much we loved Whitney in the ’80s, and thankfully Halogen gives us the chance to revisit “The Greatest Voice of All Time” in this century with a new twist on the classic. The Atlanta-based production duo apply a vibrant house backdrop to Whitney’s heart-stopping vocals, and the result is a rousing dance number that will make you wanna feel the heat with somebody — as well as to snag the track gratis on Halogen’s Soundcloud page.

I’lls – Let Me Have Just One

Another day, another solid Australian electronic act. The Melbourne three-piece known as I’lls (and pronounced “isles”) is comprised of Simon Lam (drums, vocals), Hamish Mitchell (keys) and Dan Rutman (guitar). The guys, who are classically-trained jazz musicians call themselves “the outcasts of jazz — jazz rogues.” Having enjoyed success in their native Australia, they are on their way to breaking out overseas thanks in part to the support of artists like Chet Faker for their distinctive left-of-centre pop sound. Their new single, “Let Me Have Just One” is an intriguing and evocative track that will be featured on their upcoming EP, Can I Go With You To Go Back To My Country.

Miami Horror – Love Like Mine

Australian outfit Miami Horror have just released their second LP, All Possible Futures via Dine Alone Records and are currently on tour in North America in support of the LP. The new record is ripe with post-disco dance jams inspired by ’80s rock groups along the likes of Talking Heads, New Order and INXS — as well as iconic pop stars such as Paul Simon and Michael Jackson. The sunny disposition on the album can be attributed to the band’s time spent writing and producing the album in LA.
