D.D Dumbo is the moniker of Australian artist and multi-instrumentalist Oliver Hugh Perry. The structure of his songs are minimal, authentic and complemented by Perry’s reverberated vocals. Looks like a promising future for this young artist that just signed to 4AD, and recently supported Tame Impala and tUnE-yArDs on tour. There’s a certain “it” factor that emanates from new buzzworthy artists, and let’s just say bAnoffee‘s got it. The Australian newcomer, born Martha Brown has just released the single “Got It,” in anticipation of her debut EP set to release next month. With entrancing production from Oscar Key Sung, the intricately syncopated rhythm draws you in from the start and the abstract percussion provides the perfect backdrop for Brown’s gossamer vocals. Australia has not stopped producing quality indie bands the last couple of years. Enter Movement, an experimental three-piece based out of Sydney. Like most of their music released thus far, “Like Lust” is a slow tempo track, defying genre by blurring elements of R&B, electronica and psychadelic rock. The trio signed to Modular Recordings (Tame Impala, Cut Copy) and have already supported Solange and Darkside on tour. Listen to “Like Lust” below.
Kevin Parker of Tame Impala surprises us with this reinterpretation of Michael Jackson’s “Stranger in Moscow.” The cover clearly retains the Aussie psychedelic-rockers identity using a cosmic blend of delays, reverbs, fuzz and phasing. A perfect sound to escape from this boom of new album releases.
Chris Martin may be making news lately for his “conscious uncoupling” with Gwyn, but as you may’ve also heard he has his new album Ghost Stories coming out April 19. Cbeck out the superb Urban Contact remix of Coldplay’s new minimalist single “Midnight” below and consciously calm yourself over the stars’ split. Panama have put out another amazing single with the US release of their EP Always via Future Classic earlier this month. True to the Aussie group’s epithet of purveyors of nostalgic electronic sounds, “Strange Feeling” is a warm, piano-driven track with hopeful indie house vibes. Another installment of Remix Roundup to get your Saturday night started off right. In a brilliant move by Bonobo, Simon Green uncovers the 1977 track “Les LaBas” by French jazz instrumentalist Henri Texier. With a South American-feel to it, this epic recast will transport you to someplace tropical in no time. Next up is The Knocks remix of HAIM‘s “If I Could Change Your Mind,” which transforms the original pop number into a seductive after hours edit. Finally, continuing the tropics theme is Sydney-based Thief, whose track “Closer” gets dressed up in calypso vibes by New Zealand duo Weird Together. Fresh off a showcase at SXSW and the release of his EP, Thief’s PJ Wolf is poised to bring his minimalist electropop sound to the masses this year. For today’s installment of Remix Roundup, we have three completely different but individually stellar tracks in their own right. First off is Sydney duo Olympic Ayres, who dropped the upbeat electro-gem “Take Flight” a few weeks back. While not actually a remix, this electronic original will have you taking flight in no time, and is due out on their forthcoming EP Leisureplex later this year. Next up is the sexy mashup of Foals “My Number” over Booka Shade’s “Charlotte,” by fellow Australian artist RÜFÜS. Last but not least is the latest from Austrian producer Cid Rim, an electric remix of Sky Ferreira’s “You’re Not The One” replete with arpeggios, shiny vocals over a choppy chorus, and a punchy bass line — the stuff good remixes are made of. Australian band The Preatures burst onto the scene last year in a powerful way with their second EP, Is This How You Feel. Fronted by Isabella Manfredi — whose vocal chops channel the likes of Stevie Nicks — the Preatures’ sound is referential to the rhythmic and tightly-sequenced pop of the 80s that seems to be making a comeback these days (much to my delight).
Take a listen to their ridiculously infectious, feel-good title track below. They’ll be playing a couple of shows in NYC this week, before hitting up SXSW the next and continuing the festival circuit with Coachella and Bonnaroo. AND — to let my DC friends in on a little secret — they’ll be opening for the as-of-yet-unannounced MS MR show at 930 Club in June!!
Another Saturday night is upon us, which means it’s time for a roundup of this week’s finest electronic offerings. EXROYALE, a mysterious new group (self-described as a glow in the dark game of truth or dare), have a track called “Give It Up” that has been given the remix treatment by Ra Ra Riot‘s Milo Bonacci.
