German musician and composer Nils Frahm has successfully mixed classical piano style with analog synthesizers. Having trained under the pianist Nahum Brodski — a student of the last scholar of Tschaikowski — his skilled composition and exquisite melodies reveal a modern-day mastery of the craft.

Jagwar Ma – Man I Need

Noel Gallagher has declared himself a fan of Jagwar Ma — the dance rock duo whose music he deemed more important than an Oasis reformation. And no wonder — the Aussie’s debut album, Howlin’ is replete with energy, synths and chemistry. On the album track “Man I Need,” Gabriel Winterfield’s vocals and the structure of the riffs seem to roll along in unison with one another. Stream the single, along with Andy Buchan’s free edit below.

Washed Out – It All Feels Right

After an unsuccessful job search upon completion of his graduate program in 2009, an unemployed Ernest Greene did the next best thing. He moved back in with his parents and started producing music out of his bedroom under the name Washed Out. Thanks to social media and the influential blogosphere, his music gained momentum and in 2011, he was signed to SubPop records.

The now established Atlanta-based band released their second album, Paracosm, this past summer to favorable reviews from critics. Savvy listeners will also recognize their sound — catalogued under the chillwave movement — from the opening sequence of the hit series Portlandia. On the heels of my best of post, I had to sneak this last one in before the new year. This deep house cut comes from young producer Allen Hansrisuk, or Shmallen as he goes by. Sampling from Destiny’s Child “Independent Woman,” this sexy rework is the perfect track to play at your NYE party, so scoop it up gratis below.

It’s that time of year again — the time in which the year’s best ear candy is served up in one delicious location for your listening pleasure. Unlike last year, however, I’ve streamlined my ‘best of’ index into a selective top ten list — so you KNOW they’re the cream of the crop.

Cheers to CHVRCHES, Disclosure and Arctic Monkeys amongst others for bringing us their indie A-game in 2013. So basically, well done to the UK; thanks for the aural alchemy. All of these artists made an impact on the music scene this past year in a major way — so if you see some cross-collaboration, well, there’s a reason. Without further ado, I present my top picks for 2013:

The National Pool – Better

About a month ago the following synth track fell into inbox, only to be delivered to my spam folder. Fortunately I was able to recover it before it was too late, as not everyday does a local talent such as The National Pool present itself in my purview.

The Baltimore-based group consists of Bradley White and Kyle Cornett, who have been making chilled out tunes together since 2006. On their track “Better,” the duo explore a verse-verse song structure with the meditative repetition of a simple set of lyrics, counterbalanced by a flurry of synth sounds and the use of a vocoder. The result is a dreamy soundscape, similar to Odesza. Stream below.
